Emission Reduction Program for the Coastal Mangrove
Despite the fact that mangroves are highly threatened natural forest ecosystem along Ghanas coasts and inland waterways, to date they have not been the focus of any serious national REDD+ consideration, though USAID/USFS have been supporting work in this area for more than 5 years. The lack of national attention appears to be a critical oversight. Recent work in Ghana suggests that approximately 2,000Mg/ha are stored in the mangrove system, one hundred fold more than in tropical high forests. The magnitude of carbon stocks coupled with existing threat to these unique and environmentally important forest types creates a strong imperative for REDD+ action.
